Think green! An entire Sri Lankan village to be powered by Solar power

The Ministry of Power & Energy in Sri Lanka has announced that Galgamuwa village in Monaragala will be the first ever fully solar-powered village in Sri Lanka.

The project has funding from India and is set to provide 800 households with electricity generated purely from the Sun as of tomorrow, the 30th of June 2009.

Whilst the consumption of electricity in these rural households is minimal, it is, without a doubt, the right step forward.

Sri Lanka has turned to Solar power in other regions of the island as well. The war ravaged Northern province has seen Solar powered phone booths installed in recent weeks.
