Some Muslims consider music as being evil. That line of thinking is not evident in Sri Lanka.
My Muslim neighbours tell me that during the month of Ramadan such singers would go from door to door, singing songs in Tamil fused with verses from the Quran (the Muslim Holy Book).
Muslim households would in return pay them a few Rupees or give them bags of rice.
Sri Lankan Muslims speak Tamil and consider the language their mother tongue. Some have confused the Kaffir dancers on show at the Barefoot Gallery with the Singing Lebbais of Sri Lanka. The singer above, I'm reliably informed, is not a descendant of the Kaffir people.
