I spent most of my childhood on the beach. I recall hearing about local fishing families consuming turtle eggs as a part of their diet. Some claimed to have become stronger by eating turtle eggs.
None of these people genuinely knew that turtle species were threatened because Sri Lanka's coastlines have seen turtles coming back to lay their eggs year after year. They did not know the global scale of their actions. Although the video above talks about poachers, most locals thought of it as a free delicacy.
Times have changed. Several organisations and successive governments have successfully raised awareness amongst local communities. Today most people know enough to leave the turtles well alone. The tourists that the turtles bring in has also meant that there is more money to be made by saving these beautiful creatures.
