10,000 Tamil IDPs return home

10,000 Tamil refugees, who were confined to camps, have been returned to their villages on Friday, September 11 2009.

On Friday, 9,920 people were taken home by bus to their villages in the east and north, said Senaka Ubesinghe, a government spokesman. Another 74 Tamil university students were sent home, he said.
In July the Sri Lankan government set it's self a goal of returning 80% of displaced within 180 days (6 months).

The government so far has released more than 15,000 refugees who are being held in the crowded camps, where the military put the hundreds of thousands of people who were with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the final months of the war, many of them held by the Tigers against their will.
