Police said that the advertisement for male and female police constables and drivers placed a few days ago had received an enthusiastic response.The Rajapaksa administration has also made the Tamil language mandatory for all state employees.
"Since 1979 we have not been able to recruit anyone from the north and east, especially in Jaffna due to LTTE [Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam] threats and intimidation," police spokesman Nimal Mediwake told BBC Sinhala's Chandana Keerthi Bandara.
"We had somewhere close to 6,000 applications to join the police."
