Sri Lanka releases two senior Tamil Tiger leaders on bail

Velayudam Dayanidi (a.k.a. Daya Master) and V.K. Pancheratnam (a.k.a. George Master) surrendered to the Sri lankan armed forces in April 2009. Both men have been released on bail today.

Daya was the Tamil Tigers' media coordinator and George was a close aide of SP Tamilchelvan, and later became the Tigers' official translator. George had accompanied the Tigers to Thailand, Japan, Norway and Germany for peace talks with the Sri Lankan government in 2002/03.

A Sri Lankan court on Friday released on bail two members of the Tamil Tiger rebel group who gave themselves up a month before the military leadership of their movement was wiped out, officials said.

Court officials said former Tiger spokesman Velayudam Dayanidi, better known as Daya Master, and a top Tiger translator V.K. Pancheratnam were released on cash bail of 22,000 dollars each.
In July 2009, George Master's daughter, who resides in Australia, decided to visit her imprisoned father. Despite various claims from pro Tiger elements in Australia, who told her that she would be arrested and tortured for being the daughter of a Tiger leader, she arrived in Sri Lanka with her family.
